The number of layers (panes) of a window is directly related to its thermal conductivity, sound insulation, strength, and water-tightness. For conventional double-layer windows, all these indicators are much lower: 

• Sealing and water-tightness. Additional window panes form insulated glass units (IGUs) that are also called «sealed units». They do not exist in ordinary windows, but in triple pane windows they eliminate the problem of condensation when there is a large temperature difference between inside and outside, as well as the problem of icing in the cold season.
• Soundproofing. Additional glass and layers of air effectively dampen sound vibrations from the outside.
• Strength. Additional glass is protection from branches and wind during bad weather.
• Thermal conductivity. Perhaps this is one of the most important advantages of triple pane windows over conventional ones. To measure heat loss, the U-factor is used. The lower it is, the less heat loss. And this means that the climate in your home is more comfortable.

Windows are one of the main ways that warmth flows in and out of our home. During the winter months, heated air escapes through the windows, but cold convection creates two air currents that simultaneously cool the interior and heat the air outside. Heat loss in this case can reach 40-50%. During the summer months, heat enters through the windows due to convection, solar radiation, and with air. Unwanted heat gain and sunlight makes the home environment uncomfortable, can cause furniture and floors to fade, and increases energy bills due to use of the air conditioner.

 The U-factor is used to evaluate the energy efficiency of windows. It is calculated taking into account all methods of heat transfer from the house and into it. The lower this indicator, the better the quality of the window: 

• In windows with one pane of glass, the U-factor is 1.3. This is a very bad level, due to which the building is cold in winter and hot in summer, and electricity bills are very high. 
• In modern homes with quality windows, the U-factor can be as low as 0.3, or even lower. 
• Triple pane windows in our homes have a low U-factor — an important indicator of quality. It corresponds to the level of thermal conductivity of the walls and is equal to 0.1, due to which heat loss is almost zero. This means that the house is warm in winter and cool in summer, and energy costs for heating and air conditioning are significantly reduced.
